French President calls Nice attack a terrorist act

(VOVworld) – After an emergency government meeting early Friday morning, French President Francoise Hollande said on national TV that the attack in Nice was a horrific terrorist attack.

An attacker killed 80 people and injured scores who are in critical condition. He said the French state of emergency has been extended for 3 months and France will maintain the 10,000-person homeland security force.
Hollande pledged to increase France’s participation in the anti-IS campaign in Syria and Iraq. He visited Nice on Friday to assess the situation and share his sympathy with local people. AFP quoted a local police source as saying that investigators have identified the driver as a 31-year-old French national of Tunisian descent.

In another development Italy has tightened its border security and is closely checking all vehicles from France. RAI-news-24 said security has been strengthened at airport, stations, and other public places.

EC President Donald Tusk, who is in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, to attend the 11th ASEM summit, said the EU will stand side by side with the French people and government in the fight against violence and hostility.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders described the attack as "barbaric". The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was shocked by the attack in Nice and pledged Canada's support for France.
