(VOVWORLD) - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong died at the age of 80 on July 19th.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a key leader of Vietnam, being a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam for 57 years and holding the positions of Party General Secretary for 14 years, President for over 2 years, and Chairman of the National Assembly for over 5 years. Together with the Party Central Committee and the Government, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong led the Party, the people, and the army to obtain great achievements in national construction and development. The General Secretary was also a communism ideologist with profound theories.
Since joining the Communist Party of Vietnam in December 1967, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong devoted his whole life to Party building. 29 years working at the Communist Review, which is the Party's leading political theoretical research and communication agency, and then moving to other agencies to take on higher positions, Mr. Trong had never distanced himself from theory. He said that the Party's theory will help determine the strategic vision of the Party and the nation.
Mr. Trong directed the entire Party, people, and army to creatively apply and develop Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thought, maintain being steadfast in the goal of national independence and socialism and the Party's innovative policy, ensure national interests, and firmly build and defend the nation.
The General Secretary said it is a basic principle, a solid foundation of the Party, and has vital significance for the regime and the nation.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuc, former Director of the Institute of Party History, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, said: “General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is prestigious leader and a wholehearted theorist and scientist. Since he was elected General Secretary by the 11th Party Congress, he had clearly demonstrated loyalty and steadfastness to Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thought, the development path of the Vietnamese revolution in close association with national independence and socialism, the path that the Party and President Ho Chi Minh chose in 1930.”
As the Party General Secretary, he demonstrated a core leadership role, working with the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Secretariat to build solidarity, unity in will and action within the Party. He said that solidarity is a core value and great national unity is a strategic path, a source of strength, and a great driving force for Vietnam’s glorious victories.
Journalist Nhi Le, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Review, said: “General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had been trusted by the Party and people and has held 3 important positions: Party General Secretary of 3 terms, President, and Chairman of the National Assembly. He is also a special theorist in the national renewal period, initiated by General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh. After 40 years, Mr. Trong had gradually formed the theory of reform, with the core being Nguyen Phu Trong's theoretical system.”
In the last days of his life, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong always devoted himself to the Party and national revolutionary cause to continue promoting Vietnam's potential, position, and reputation internationally.
