(VOVworld) - Germany's interior minister Thomas de Maiziere and justice minister Heilo Maas on Tuesday announced plans for security reforms after a deadly truck attack at a Berlin Christmas market.

The plan, a response to terror threats by the Islamic State, includes arresting extremists considered potentially violent. Berlin wants to pressure countries that refuse to take back citizens who have been denied asylum by Germany by cutting foreign aid, said Minister de Maiziere. He said rejected asylum seekers considered a danger to the public by German security services will in the future be detained more easily and longer pending their deportations. Under proposed new laws, rejected asylum seekers could be placed in pre-deportation custody for up to 18 months if they are considered a threat. There is also a plan to declare Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria safe countries of origin with no war or disaster situation to more easily expel citizens from these areas.
