(VOVWORLD) - Germany has rejected a proposal by US President Donald Trump to invite Russia back into the Group of Seven most advanced economies, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a newspaper interview published Monday.

Maas told Rheinische Post that he did not see any chance of allowing Russia back into the G7 as long as there is no meaningful progress in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Maas described the current relationship with Russia as difficult in many areas, but admitted that the world needs Russia to resolve conflicts in Syria, Libya, and Ukraine.
Last month, Trump proposed expanding the G7 to include Russia, which had been expelled in 2014 following Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.
