Global leaders condemn assault on Brazilian government buildings

(VOVWORLD) - Leaders of many countries have voiced their support for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after supporters of Brazil's far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday invaded Brazil's Supreme Court and its Congressional building and surrounded the Presidential Palace in Brasilia.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that “fascists have decided to stage a coup" in Brazil, expressed his support for Brazil's new leader, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and lamented that the political right in Brazil has failed to uphold the Organization of American States (OAS)’ dedication to non-violence. Petro said it is urgent to hold an OAS meeting.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric said the attack on the three branches of the Brazilian state was unconscionable. He said the Brazilian government has Chile’s full support in the face of this cowardly and vile attack on democracy. 

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso condemned the actions of disrespect and vandalism perpetrated against democratic institutions in Brasilia, attacking democratic order and public security.

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez expressed support for President Lula da Silva against the "coup plot", and said solidarity in Latin America should be upheld at this critical time.

European Council President Charles Michel extended his full support for Brazil’s newly-elected President and condemned the assault on the democratic institutions of Brazil.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday pledged to punish the  supporters of former President Bolsonaro after they stormed government buildings, smashing windows and using furniture to form barricades against security forces. He said that all the people who did this will be found and punished.
