Hanoi celebrates 50 years of “Dien Bien Phu in the air” victory
(VOVWORLD) - The historic “Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu in the air” victory in 1972 was crucial for Vietnam’s final victory in the anti-US war, Hanoi Party Secretary Dinh Tien Dung said at Monday’s 50 year commemoration of defeating the US’s Operation Linebacker II.

Mr. Dung said the operation targeting Hanoi and several other northern localities from December 18 to 29, 1972, was the US’s largest air raid since World War II, involving hundreds of strategic B52 bombers.
Vietnam’s victory over the airstrike paved the way for the signing of the 1973 Paris Accords on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam.
“The lessons and experiences drawn from our struggle for national liberation and reunification have been effectively applied in our current construction of Hanoi and the nation as a whole,” said Secretary Dung.
General Pham Tuan, former deputy commander of the Vietnam Air Force said, “The ‘Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu in the air’ victory was a great victory in all aspects, militarily, politically, diplomatically, tactically and technically.”
