(VOVworld)- Activities to mark Hanoi’s 58th Liberation Day, on October 10 are underway across the capital city. October 10, 1954 marked a glorious milestone in Vietnam when the Vietnamese People’s Army marched into the capital, which had been occupied by the French colonialists for 9 years. The event turned a new page in the country’s history. 58 years later, memories of those glorious moments remain fresh in the minds of many Hanoians, especially former liberation soldiers, like Colonel Pham Duy Tan. Tan was the commander of the Battalion 308 which liberated the capital city 58 years ago. "When we reached Cau Giay district, we hoisted a red flag with a yellow star and moved forward toward Cua Nam and Hoan Kiem lake. People there waved their hands and flags to welcome us and they even gave us cookies. People cried and we were very moved and proud. A lot of people and soldiers gathered in Ba Dinh square but they were all orderly. We were proud of our nation", said Mr. Tan..
