The Palermo Prosecutor's Office in Sicily, Italy, has investigated criminal activities by Mered and his Ethiopian accomplice Ghermay Ermias. Medhanie has been accused of organising illegal migration across the Mediterranean to Europe.
Medhanie’s network was likely involved in the sinking of a vessel off the Italian island of Lampedusa in 2013 that killed 366 people.
