On the same day, US Secretary of State John Kerry said there was “no justification” for the coup, and warned of negative implications for the US-Thai relationship, particularly military ones. The European Union urged Thailand to return to democracy. British Foreign Secretary William Hague called on Thailand to restore a civilian government that is democratically elected. Meanwhile, the UK’s Financial Times warned that the military coup could plunge Southeast Asia’s second-biggest economy further into crisis and raise the prospect of international sanctions.
