During the phone call, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the recent desecration of the Quran in the two Nordic countries hurt Muslim believers worldwide, and called for severe punishment of the perpetrators of the insults.

He also called for an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the issue.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan strongly condemned any affront to the Abrahamic religions' books and peoples' religious beliefs.

Last Friday, the far-right Danish group of Danske Patrioter posted a video of a man burning a copy of the Quran and trampling an Iraqi flag in front of the Iraqi Embassy in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

In late June, an Iraqi immigrant in Sweden burned the Quran outside a Stockholm mosque. Many countries have criticised the action.
