Jubouri, a politician from Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, won 194 out of 273 votes from those who attended the session. His rival, Shroug al-Ubaiyachi got 19 votes. The nomination of a Sunni to be the new parliamentary speaker showed that differences between factions in Iraq’s parliament have been set aside toward forming a national unity government. According to the Iraqi constitution, a new president should be chosen within the next 30 days after the election of the speaker. The new president will have 15 days to ask parliament to nominate a prime minister, who will be responsible for forming a new government.
