(VOVworld) - The Iraqi Kurdish parliament voted Wednesday to send Peshmerga forces to the Syrian town of Kobane to fight against Islamic State militants.
Yusuf Mohammed Sadiq, President of the Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, said the plan was accepted by all members. Peshmerga forces will go to Kobane as a part of an international coalition, Sadiq said, adding that this is the first time the Peshmerga has reached out of its region to combat "terrorists". He noted that the decision is a step to ensure the global safety.

After the vote, Syed Mustafa Kadir, the Peshmerga Minister, said "an appropriate number of Peshmerga troops will be sent to Kobane along with the needed military equipment." Parliamentarian Aydin Maruf said the Kurdish regional government will send 200 troops to Syria via Turkey's southeastern provinces of Sirnak, Hakkari, and Sanliurfa, which borders Kobane.
On Wednesday, at least 58 IS militants were killed in battles with the Iraqi army and international coalition’s air strikes. About 30 militants were killed and 30 others wounded in clashes with Iraqi security forces in Fallujah's Al Amiriyah district. The US-led coalition air strikes killed at least 11 IS gunmen and injured 52 others near the Mosul Dam.
