Iraqi Prime Minister’s Coalition takes lead in parliamentary elections
Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi Prime Minister.
(VOVworld) – Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission on Monday released the official results of the April 30 parliamentary election in which Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law coalition won 92 of 328 seats. The result puts the Iraqi leader in a strong position to secure a third term. But his collation didn’t get the majority of seats needed to form a government. Maliki’s main competitors only gained no more than 29 seats in the parliament. This was Iraq’s first parliamentary election since the US troop pullout in late 2011.
