At a joint press conference, Mr. Abe said the two sides have reached an agreement on key agenda for the G7 summit. The two leaders promised to step up efforts for an early ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Canada and Japan are among the 12 countries that signed the TPP in February. Abe and Trudeau supported the idea of improving bilateral economic ties through dialogue between the two countries’ vice foreign ministers, placing high priority on areas of infrastructure, energy, the business environment, tourism, student exchanges, and cooperation in science and technology.

Abe said the two sides shared “serious concerns about unilateral acts that escalate tensions” in the East Sea. They agreed to cooperate to secure free and safe waters based on the rule of law. Abe and Trudeau also agreed on the need for effective sanctions on North Korea to prevent it from further developing its nuclear missile capability.
