(VOVworld) – Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry said Tokyo was considering the construction of new nuclear reactors to replace aging generators. The Ministry reported that as the government strives to revive Japan’s nuclear power sector, stalled since the Fukushima crisis, new nuclear power plants are feasible solution.

The role that nuclear power can play remains "as significant as renewable energy" in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and "the government should clarify its stance on building new reactors as well as replacing (old) reactors with new ones while promoting an understanding of nuclear power among the public," the report said. While the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is eager to reactivate nuclear reactors that were taken offline following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis, it advocates the decommissioning of older facilities that may be vulnerable to disasters, apparently aiming to ease public fears about the use of nuclear power.
