Japan detects Chinese submarine near disputed island
(VOVWORLD) - Tokyo has voiced its protest against Beijing for sailing a submarine near disputed islands claimed by both Japan and China, saying the action had increased tensions between the two sides.
Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said the vessel detected last Thursday was an advanced stealthy nuclear submarine. It is a 110 meter-long Shang-class vessel, which is able to dive deeper and for longer than older boats and armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
The contested uninhabited islands in the East China Sea are known as the Senkaku in Japan, and Diaoyu in China.
