It will be the second donation from Japan after the first batch of nearly 1 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine earlier this month.
"The supply is a proof of the country's friendly relationship," the Japanese embassy in Hanoi said in a statement.
Arrangements are also being made to send 1 million doses each to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taiwan.
Japan has pledged 1 billion USD and 30 million doses to the COVAX facility and said this month its direct shipments to Asian neighbours are being made outside of COVAX to speed up delivery.
