Among 427 valid votes in the runoff, Kishida secured 257, defeating vaccination minister Taro Kono, who garnered 170, after the first round of voting did not produce a decisive winner.
The Diet is scheduled to convene an emergency meeting on October 4 to elect a new Prime Minister to replace Suga Yoshihide.
