This was the largest anti-government protest since Israel launched its assault on Gaza last October.
Sunday was the first day of a four-day campaign in Jerusalem to pressure Netanyahu and his Government to hold a general election and form a new Government capable of reaching a hostage exchange agreement with Hamas. Many opposition leaders in Israel declared their support for the campaign, calling it an act of national salvation.
Despite pressure, Netanyahu said he will not hold a general election in this context, because an election at this time would be inappropriate and would only benefit Hamas.
