Localities fight torrential rains, floods
(VOVWORLD) -Torrential rains and floods following the recent Son Tinh storm ravaged many northern and northern central localities. Local authorities and the armed forces are working against time help people recover from storm aftermath.
50 border soldiers were sent to Xuan Pho commune, Ha Tinh province, to help locals repair houses and provide medical check-ups to flood victims, especially the elderly. Colonel Duong Quoc Nhat of Mobile Training Battalion, said: “Soldiers help people in Xuan Pho commune overcome flood consequences. Our unit is sending personnel to help repair roofless houses, drain sewage system, and provide medical check-ups.”
Nguyen Hai Nam, Chairman of Nghi Xuan district’s People’s Committee, warned of landslide risk and said: “First, water should be pumped out to salvage agricultural production. Damaged houses will soon be restored. We try our best to provide timely assistance to locals.”
In Yen Bai province, the storm has left 10 people dead and 8 missing. Economic loss is estimated at 7.3 million USD. Relief efforts are underway there. Nguyen Huy Anh, Chairman of the Van Ho district’s People’s Committee, Son La province, said: “Water levels in streams are rising. There are 2 submerged areas on national road No6. Long Luong hamlet is inundated. Forces have been mobilized to evacuate people, but we cannot approach some remote communes due to heavy rainfall and flood.”
Heavy rains are forecast to continue ravaging northern and northern central regions.
