Maritime security - common concern of Vietnam and ASEAN
(VOVworld) - The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus (ADSOM+) has concluded in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The participants acknowledged the importance of maritime security and agreed to resolve peacefully the East Sea issues in line with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and other regional commitments signed between ASEAN and its partners. Chinese representatives affirmed that Beijing will adopt every possible measure to peacefully resolve East Sea issues through negotiations based on international laws. Meanwhile, Japan and Cambodia supported the expansion of the Sea Security Forum. The US delegation applauded progress made recently in creating a Code of Conduct in the East Sea between ASEAN and China.
Vietnam’s Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Chi Vinh said that Vietnam has done its best to ensure peace and stability in the East Sea. Vietnam and China signed an agreement on East Sea issues during a visit to China late last year by Vietnamese Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong. The agreement has improved relations between Vietnam and China to the benefit of ASEAN and other countries. Minister Vinh pointed to examples of cooperative efficiency between Vietnam and China: "Cooperation between Vietnam and China has been praised by other countries, especially the activities of a group of experts in natural disasters relief. This is one of five groups of experts working under the cooperation program between ASEAN and its partners. This group is often considered a role model for the others because of their efficiency".
Mr. Vinh said issues that involve more than two countries must have a multilateral solution on the basis of respecting international laws and ensuring benefits of regional and international community.
