In a joint statement Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they will seek closer economic ties and convergence on tax issues. They also want to develop a common diplomatic approach, boost cooperation on foreign affairs and security including the fight against terrorism, and do more to promote common interests and values. The leaders also pledged to improve cooperation in education and research and to develop a joint proposal for climate protection.

The statement was released on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Elysee Treaty of friendship and cooperation between Paris and Berlin. The document remains the basis of a broad and trust-based cooperation between the two countries.
