The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced the e-passport to its passport system, which leads to the digital passport, connecting with the Ministry of Interior’s digital ID system. In order to streamline the application process for a visa to Thailand, the ministry is also providing an e-visa online application service at 38 Royal Thai Embassies and Royal Thai Consulates-General in 23 countries worldwide.

The Thai government sets a target to offer the e-visa service covering all countries, in which Thai embassies and consulates-general are located, in the next three years. Applicants may apply for their visa through the e-visa website www.thaievia.go.th. 

Speaking on 12 March 2023, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister and Acting Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri quoted the Prime Minister as saying that all state agencies must reduce their work procedures by adopting modern technology for quick operations and service facilitation for the people.

The Prime Minister said that the adoption of digital technology would contribute to the implementation of the country’s economic policies and the development of the tourism industry. He pointed out that the Government has laid the foundation to become a digital government, in line with the “Thailand 4.0” policy.

The Cabinet on 28 February 2023 approved the draft version on the Digital Government Development Plan of Thailand, 2023-2027. The plan sets guidelines that would enable Thailand to become a fully functional digital government. State agencies will be provided with support to apply innovations and technology to upgrade their management and operations for greater efficiency, flexibility, and transparency.

These guidelines place importance on 10 focus areas, namely 1) education, 2) health and medicine, 3) agriculture, 4) people’s welfare, 5) public participation, transparency, and accountability, 6) promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, 7) the environment, 8) labor, 9) tourism, and 10) justice.
