(VOVWORLD) - Myanmar has established an interim government led by Chairman of the State Administration Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Min Aung Hlaing as Prime Minister.
Vice Senior General Soe Win will serve as Deputy Prime Minister, according to a decree of the State Administration Council (SAC) on Sunday.
General Min Aung Hlaing announced that Myanmar plans to hold new general elections in the second half of 2023, after preparations, expected to last six months, are completed in August 2023. He pledged to hold multi-party elections and said the government is ready to work with any special envoy from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Myanmar has been in a crisis since February 1, after the army arrested State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and officials from the National League for Democracy (NLD) on charges of rigged elections. The army came into power and declared a year-long state of emergency across the country. ASEAN is leading diplomatic effort to resolve the crisis in Myanmar.
