NA Chairman meets WB President in the US

(VOVworld) - Vietnam wishes to receive additional support from the World Bank (WB) to finalize its market economy policies, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung told WB President Jim Yong Kim during their meeting in the US on Tuesday. Mr. Hung called on the bank to increase preferential loans to help Vietnam with sustainable development, infrastructure upgrades, and poverty reduction. As one of the countries most affected by climate change, he urged the bank to help Vietnam cope.

President Jim Yong Kim hailed Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements in recent years, particularly achieving its sustainable development goals (SDGs). The WB exists to support development in nations, like Vietnam, he said, and promised the bank will consider helping Vietnam cope with climate change.

The same day, NA Chairman Hung attended a W-organized seminar on the Vietnamese legislature’s increasingly important role in national development. In his remarks, Chairman Hung said Vietnam has made great strides in development, from urban to rural areas and in all socio-economic sectors. Vietnam has achieved its MDGs, he said, stressing the substantial support provided by the WB. He said preserving peace, ensuring national security, protecting the nation’s sovereignty and coping with climate change remain Vietnam’s biggest concerns: "Adverse climate phenomena have caused floods, landslides, and underwent Vietnam’s achievements in poverty reduction. We call on the World Bank to help us find an appropriate transitional formula for further development and help Vietnam join international efforts to ensure peace, resolve disputes, address climate change, and mitigate natural disasters."
