National Assembly debates socio-economic development report

(VOVworld)- National Assembly deputies today discussed a report on the implementation of the socio-economic development and budget plans in 2012 and so far this year. The deputies acknowledged efforts made by the Government, the National Assembly, enterprises and the public to achieve positive results, but they said the government needs to take more resolute steps to achieve the set targets. Nguyen Duc Hien, a deputy from Nghe An province urged the Government to pay more attention to poverty reduction and create a specific mechanism to help people whose lands were confiscated for the construction of hydro power plants.“Vietnam now has around 1,000 small and big hydropower plants. It is important to reduce poverty in the resettlement areas. I propose to issue a specific mechanism for this region and a government report on this work later this year. In addition to granting loans to poor and near poor households, we need to give people in the resettlement areas access to credit so they can expand production. The government also needs to review mechanisms for poverty reduction to work out additional related policies”, said Mr. Hien.

The deputies praised the positive results of the Government’s management of the macro-economy. But they pointed out some things that the government needs to focus on to ensure economic sustainability. Pham Huy Hung, a deputy from Hanoi, says: “We need to review the master plan on economic restructuring to identify the specific targets, plans and roadmap for each activity, focusing on the establishment of a macro balance, and identifying the tasks and responsibility of each ministry, sector and locality. In addition, the Government, ministries and sectors need to take resolute steps to stimulate demand, deal with overstocks and bad debt, break the ice of the real estate market, and review mechanisms and policies to narrow the gaps between policies and reality”.

The deputies proposed more investment in agriculture and boosting the marine economy in order to boost national economic growth.
