Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the investigation is underway and it would be wrong to make any speculations at this time. Kazakhstan's Senate chairman said the cause of the crash is still unknown.

The Embraer 190 passenger plane was flying from Baku to Grozny, Russia, when it crashed on Wednesday morning near the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan.

The airline said there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board. According to Kazakh officials, the people on board were citizens of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. The plane had to divert from its original route and make an emergency landing.
