Vessels from Italy's navy and coastguard together with ships sent by humanitarian groups joined the operation to rescue the migrants. From July 28 to 31, more than 6,500 people were rescued. Italy has been on the front line of Europe's migrant crisis for three years, and more than 400,000 have successfully made the crossing to Italy from North Africa since the beginning of 2014.
