(VOVWORLD) -The 2022 chemistry Nobel prize goes to Carolyn R. Bertozzi (USA), Morten Meldal (Denmark) and K. Barry Sharpless (USA) “for the development of click chemistry and bio-orthogonal chemistry,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Wednesday.
Carolyn Bertozzi has taken click chemistry to a new dimension and started utilizing it in living organisms. Her bio-orthogonal reactions take place without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell.
Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal have laid the foundation for a functional form of chemistry – click chemistry – in which molecular building blocks snap together quickly and efficiently. Mr. Sharpless has won the chemistry Nobel prize twice.
From 1901 to 2021, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded 113 chemistry Nobel prizes.
The Nobel prizes for Literature and Peace will be announced on October 6 and October 7, respectively.
