North Korea likely to allow resumed search for missing American soldiers

(VOVWORLD) - North Korea may allow the US to resume a search for thousands of American war dead from the 1950-1953 Korean War, Kelly McKeague, head of the US Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), announced on Wednesday.

But it will be months before excavations can begin and years until bone fragments are identified, he added.

13 years after its last work in North Korea, the agency could return after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed at a June 12 summit with US President Donald Trump to resume the recovery and repatriation of US remains. According to historical documents, some 7,700 Americans are unaccounted for on the Korean peninsula, with 5,300 believed to be somewhere in North Korea.
