Northwestern provinces dealing with flooding, landslides

(VOVWORLD) - Although the rain has abated since Sunday afternoon, the Northwest region continues to report damage. Work is under way to deal with all the problems.

Lai Chau province has suffered the most, with 4 people dead and 3 injured, all in Than Uyen district.

Flooding has damaged 75 houses, washed away hundreds of meters of irrigation canals and embankments in residential areas, and inundated tens of hectares of rice and tea.

Nguyen Van Thang, Chairman of the Than Uyen district People's Committee, said, “We have directed localities to evacuate people to safe places and asked people not to fish in the streams when there is high water. Harvested crops have been transported to safer ground.”

In Son La province, Muong La district was hardest hit, with 1 person dead and more than 100 houses destroyed. Floods raised water levels in rivers and streams in Song Ma, Mai Son, and Sop Cop district, disrupting people's lives and production.

Yen Bai province has reported 1 person missing in the flooding in Ho Bon commune, Mu Cang Chai district, where 34 houses were swept away.

Son La, Lai Chau, and Yen Bai province reported 8 people dead or missing and 3 injured. As of Sunday afternoon hundreds of houses were damaged and stretches of road were washed out, causing traffic jams. Reported damage has reached millions of dollars.
