(VOVworld) – US President Barack Obama vowed to work with the new Republican majority in Congress to ensure a prosperous future for Americans.

Obama made the remarks in his first official speech after his Democratic Party was trounced in midterm elections on Wednesday, adding that he was eager to find common ground with Republicans during the final two years of his presidency to bring Americans as many benefits as possible. He also expressed his hope that the Republicans would work with the government: "We can surely find the way to work together on areas that brought agreement among the American people. I look forward to Republicans putting forward their governing agenda. I want to propose my ideas on areas that I think we can move together to respond the people’s economic needs. Just take one example, we all agree on the need to create more jobs".

Obama said the failure of the Democrats in midterm elections was due to the Congress’s impasse rather than his policy or leadership.

Obama said he was planning to request a 6-billion USD fund to combat Ebola, urge the Congress to allow the use of military force to fight the self-proclaimed Islamic State, and work with Congress on a new budget.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, a Republican who is in line to be the majority leader in the new Congress said that he will work with Obama in trade deals and tax changes. McConnell said that the divided government didn’t mean to bring about a standstill in Washington. President Obama and the Republicans are scheduled to hold their first post-election talks elections on Friday.
