Those rescued were mainly from Gambia and Senegal. They were suffering from dehydration, exhaustion, and fuel burns. A spokesperson for SOS Méditerranée said that most of these migrants were minors who were trying to cross the Mediterranean without their families.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that since the beginning of the year more than 1,720 migrants have gone missing on the Mediterranean route to Europe.
