Mr. Nam told a workshop in Hanoi on Thursday that organic farming is part of efforts to restructure the national agriculture towards sustainability and value. The workshop organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project aims to collect recommendations on organic farming policy in Vietnam.

Participants stressed the need to invest in science-technology, create a favorable business climate for organic cooperatives, and assist cooperatives in transitional period towards organic agriculture with land, training, and loans. Nguyen Xuan Hong, Head of the Department of Plant Protection, said: “A legal corridor should be built to develop organic agriculture. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements ranks Vietnam one of organic production countries. But we don’t have a legal strategy to protect the rights of producers, consumers, and product brands.”

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements recognizes some Vietnamese organic products, including rice, shrimp, coconuts, cacao, coffee, tea, vegetables, and some herbal plants.
