In his opening remarks at the current Party Central Committee’s second plenum, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong underlined the need “to promote Party building and rectification, the building of a law-governed socialist state, and a comprehensive, transparent and strong political system.”

“It’s essential to build an effective apparatus, promote the fight against corruption, waste, bureaucracy, and negative acts, and resolutely protect national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while maintaining a peaceful, stable environment for national development and international integration,” he said.

Mr. Trong said that during the 2-day gathering, the Politburo, the top policy-making body of the Party Central Committee, will submit a list of candidates for the posts of State President, Prime Minister, and National Assembly Chairperson, among others.

The list should be adopted by the 200-member Party Central Committee before being submitted to the National Assembly for a vote.

Mr. Trong also said that the Politburo have prepared to introduce Party Central Committee members as candidates for the May National Assembly election.
