As the Party leader since 2011, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has demonstrated his role as the leadership nucleus, together with the Party Central Committee, the Party Politburo, and the Party Secretariat strengthening solidarity and consensus in will and action in the political system.

President Vo Van Thuong said: "The Party General Secretary pays special attention to determining the strategic vision of the Party and the nation and attaches importance to summarizing practice to constantly supplement and perfect theory on socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam. He has been steadfast with the goal of national independence and socialism, the Party's innovation policy, the principles of Party building, and ensuring the highest national interests to firmly develop and protect the fatherland."

As Head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, the Party leader has initiated ideas and guiding principles to prevent and combat corruption and negativity  which have resulted in valuable theoretical and practical lessons.

The General Secretary has pointed out basic principles for Vietnam's foreign affairs. Le Hoai Trung, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Foreign Affairs, said: "The Party leader provides theory for building and developing a comprehensive, modern diplomacy embracing the identity of Vietnamese bamboo. The General Secretary stated that diplomacy is a strong driving force for national development. His ideology stressed on the need to thoroughly grasp a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization and diversification. Vietnam is a friend to all countries, an active and responsible member of the international community, and is steadfast in flexible handling of all arising problems."

Mr. Trong has always upheld the importance of great national unity. Huynh Dam, former President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, said: "Since its establishment, the Communist Party of Vietnam has determined the importance of promoting national unity and taking the people as the root to make the resolution a success. This view has been inherited, promoted and increasingly perfected by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who affirms that great solidarity is the decisive factor for the victory and sustainability of the revolutionary cause."
