(VOVWORLD) -US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met Philippine president-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila on Thursday in a diplomatic push to deepen Washington’s alliance with its major Asian partner.

The President-elect and the Deputy Secretary agreed on the importance of partnering together to strengthen both economies, and the importance of public-private partnerships, clean energy, and the digital economy.
The two highlighted the importance of the US-Philippine Alliance to security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and discussed opportunities to deepen the alliance in the years to come.
Ms. Sherman affirmed the US commitment to maintaining and strengthening the rules-based international order. She welcomed the Philippines' participation in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework negotiations recently announced by President Joe Biden.
The same day Sherman discussed with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro Locsin the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, and the Ukraine crisis and its global impact.
