(VOVworld) – The National Steering Committee for Overcoming Consequences of Toxic Chemicals used by the US during the war in Vietnam and the UN Development Program (UNDP) on Sunday closed a site where dioxin contaminated soil was dumped. The ceremony official removes Phu Cat military airport in Binh Dinh province from the list of dioxin hotspots in Vietnam. More than 7,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil in Phu Cat airport have been safely buried as part of a 5 million USD project funded by UNDP and the Global Environment Fund since July 2010. Doctor Le Ke Son is Director of the National Steering Committee for Overcoming Toxic Chemicals used by the US during the war in Vietnam: “This project is smaller than the project to decontaminate toxic chemicals at Da Nang and Bien Hoa airports, but it’s important and significant as we basically stop the impact of Agent Orange/dioxin on the environment. We will work with the Ministry of Defence to continue monitoring this project.”
