PM meets with world leaders on sidelines of COP26

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had bilateral meetings on Monday with world leaders on the sidelines of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.

At his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, PM Chinh said that Vietnam values its relations with Australia and suggested both sides step up trade promotion, connect businesses, and strive for two-way trade to soon reach 15 billion USD and double two-way investment.

PM Morrison said Australia will donate an additional 3.7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam. He said Australia is committed to working with the government of Vietnam to promote cooperation in a sustainable way, particularly in the application of green and clean energy. He said Australia invites Vietnam to attend the clean energy supply chain summit Australia will host next year.

The two agreed to maintain close cooperation at multilateral forums and share views on ensuring security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea (known as the East Sea in Vietnam) in accordance with international law. Vietnam and Australia agreed to maintain high-level delegation exchanges.

During his meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, PM Chinh said he hopes the Commission will continue to support Vietnam in access to vaccines and medical equipment. Ms. von der Leyen said the EU will continue aiding Vietnam through direct export of vaccines and through the COVAX Facility.

Mr. Chinh suggested the EU create conditions for Vietnamese goods to enter the EU market, especially farm and aquatic products, boost cooperation and investment in e-commerce, the circular economy, renewable energy, and green agriculture. He also urged the EU to push the ratification of the Vietnam-European Union Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

During his meeting with US President Joe Biden, PM Chinh said he highly appreciates President Biden's strengthening cooperation with Vietnam and other Asian countries, stressing that Vietnam values and wants to further relations with the US .

Biden praised Vietnam's participation and strong commitment at COP26, especially its commitment to target net zero emissions, and its determination to respond to climate change and transform to a green and circular economy.

The two leaders agreed to promote the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in finance and technology to solve climate issues, especially the full implementation of the climate change mechanism under the Paris Agreement, and welcomed the participation of US companies in green development and sustainable development in Vietnam.

Talking with the President of the Republic of Korea, Prime Minister Chinh said he wishes Vietnam and the RoK to deepen their strategic partnership and strengthen cooperation in politics, diplomacy, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. President Moon Jae In said Vietnam and South Korea should continue to strengthen cooperation in economics, trade, and high tech.

During his meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayud Chan Ocha, PM Chinh proposed the signing of more cooperation agreements to increase bilateral trade turnover to 25 billion USD per year. He said he hopes Thailand will support Vietnamese businesses in joining Thai retail chains, giving priority to Vietnam's key farm products: rice, coffee, cashew nuts, pepper, vegetables, and seafood. PM Prayud said Thailand is ready to boost investment in Vietnam and promote cooperation in innovation and development, digital transformation, and human resource training.

At a meeting with the CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, PM Chinh said the Facility should continue to help Vietnam resolve environmental issues, particularly food security in the Mekong Delta, ocean plastic waste treatment, biodiversity preservation, ecosystem restoration, and implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments on climate change.
