Poles vote in “most important” election since 1989

(VOVWORLD) - Poland headed to the polls Sunday in a parliamentary election which is widely considered to be “most important” since 1989 and will determine the country’s future ties with Ukraine and the European Union.

Opinion polls in the polarized nation suggest the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) will get the most votes but may lose its majority in parliament.

If PiS fails to secure a majority, one option would be to rely on lawmakers from the far-right Confederation party, which opposes Poland’s large-scale aid to Ukraine.

Polls also suggest that opposition groupings, including the Civic Coalition, Third Way, and New Left, could together gain a majority. The liberal Civic Coalition, led by former prime minister Donald Tusk, is projected to come second after the ruling party.

Tusk has vowed to rebuild Poland’s relationship with the EU, which has become tense over the years, and dismantle PiS's judicial reforms with the aim of freeing up billions of euros in EU recovery funds.
