Portugal's Antonio Guterres appointed new UN Secretary-General
(VOVworld) - The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday approved Portugal's former Prime Minister Antonio Guterres as UN Secretary-General to succeed Ban Ki-moon whose term expires at the end of this year. Mr. Guterres promised to serve all UN member countries in a fair manner in line with the UN Charter.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Thursday congratulated the UN for managing to choose a new Secretary General in an open and transparent manner. Ban said Guterres is an experienced diplomat who served as Portuguese Prime Minister for two terms and was UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015.
President of the General Assembly Peter Thomson said he was confident Mr. Guterres will serve the global community with dedication, as a moral authority, and be the voice of collective conscience and humanity. Other UN members also sent their congratulations to Mr. Guterres.
