Post-election instability mounts in Cambodia

(VOVworld) – Cambodia’s functional agencies on Friday detected and disabled 3 rockets and a home-made bomb in Phnom Penh. Initial source said the explosives were placed opposite the main gates of Cambodia's parliament building and near Freedom Park, where the opposition forces are planning a 3-day mass protest. A bomb disposal team from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces blocked and detonated a block of explosives outside the parliament building.

This serious incident came 10 days ahead of the first session of Cambodia’s parliament. The Cambodia National Rescue Party consistently boycotted the meeting. It warned of continued protest to call for the establishment of an independent committee to investigate the polling results despite the fact that the victory by the Cambodian People’s Party with 68 seats was officially announced last Sunday.

In an effort to reduce the tension, Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni invited leaders of both parties to a meeting at the palace on Saturday.
