(VOVWORLD) -President Vo Van Thuong has affirmed the important role of Vietnam’s revolutionary press and urged journalists and their media outlets to exert greater efforts to "build a professional, humane and modern journalism".

President Thuong addressed the 17th National Press Awards Ceremony in Hanoi on Wednesday, the 98th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. He praised the prize winners, saying that their works continue to show the revolutionary, creative energy and tireless dedication.
Amid the spread of misinformation and fake news, the President urged the press to be proactive and sensitive, firmly protect the ideological foundation of the Party, refute false accusations, and strengthen the people's confidence. The press should continue to be an important weapon in the fight against corruption, wastefulness, negativity, bureaucracy and be the leading force in building and developing Vietnamese culture and people, he said.
“In the face of the rapid development of science and technology, fierce competition of information platforms and public information access behavior changes, each journalist must constantly self-study, do research, integrate into the world, innovate, practice profession, provide quality, reliable and persuasive information on traditional and especially digital platforms to keep the public's trust and respect, conquer the public's attention,” according to President Thuong.
The Organizing Committee awarded 8 A prizes, 24 B prizes, 46 C prizes, 45 Consolation prizes to the best journalistic works.
The Voice of Vietnam had 6 works honored. VOV News Department’s "Fighting the fire" won the A prize. "Steel-hulled ship 67: Big boat, double damage" by Central Region Bureau won the B prize. The C prize went to "Tracking the sand" by VOV Traffic Channel and "Alarm raised for using Pi as an illegal means of payment” by VTC Digital Television.
