President Tran Dai Quang receives Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion

(VOVworld) – President Tran Dai Quang said Vietnam wishes to enhance multi-faceted relations with Canada and deepen bilateral ties for mutual benefit and peace, stability, and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. He was speaking at a reception for Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion in Hanoi on Monday.

President Quang thanked Canada for funding Vietnam a 15-million-USD project in response to climate change.  He hoped that the Canadian parliament would soon ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership to promote free trade in the region.

Minister Dion spoke with President Quang about Canada’s external policies and priorities for improving relations with the Asia-Pacific region, including ASEAN and Vietnam. The leaders supported peaceful solutions for the East Sea disputes with respect to diplomatic and legal procedures and international law to guarantee peace, stability, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh held talks with the Canadian Foreign Minister. They discussed measures for increasing delegation exchanges in the future and how to boost cooperation in trade, economics, investment, and other sectors. They agreed to enhance collaboration at regional and international forums, including the implementation of the ASEAN-Canada action plan in the 2016-2020 period.
