Local people were rushing out of their homes when the 4.9 magnitude earthquake occured in Muong Te district in the north-western province of Lai Chau on June 16, 2020

Four children at a local kindergarten suffered from slight injuries when a plaster ceiling collapsed on them. 1.8 hectares of rice fields and 300 fruit trees were damaged.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday extended sympathy to affected households. He asked the provincial authorities to support victim families and give them instructions on coping with tremors. Inspection of infrastructure facilities must be conducted to ensure their safety, the Prime Minister said.
