(VOVworld) – Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, to protest local election results.

The ruling Justice and Development (AKP) party of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan narrowly won Sunday’s election. Riot police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Declaring the election results a fraud, the protestors shouted out slogans of protest against Prime Minister Erdogan.

Last Sunday more than 50 million voters cast ballots for mayors and local assembly members, pitting Erdogan’s Islamic-leaning AKP party against secular, nationalist and other groups. The election gave the AKP a majority in Istanbul and Ankara and many other localities despite Erdogan’s corruption scandal. The opposition has demanded a recount of the vote.
