The two-day meeting, hosted by the UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, discussed the increasing international engagement with Afghanistan and a more coordinated response to the country. The meeting also considered the recommendations of the UN report on Afghanistan, including asking the Taliban to change its policies toward Afghan women and girls.
The Taliban was absent from the meeting as a response to their demands not being met by the UN. The previous meeting was also held in Qatar’s capital Doha in May 2023. The United Nations did not invite the Taliban government to attend that meeting.
