Report: Vietnam’s multi-dimensional poverty reduces significantly
(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam’s multi-dimensional poverty rate has reduced significantly from 15.9% in 2012 to 9.1% in 2016, according to a report published Wednesday in Hanoi on “Reducing poverty in all its dimensions to ensure a good quality life for all”. Multidimensional poverty is made up of several factors that constitute poor people's experience of deprivation – such as poor health, lack of education, inadequate living standard, lack of income, disempowerment, poor quality of work and threat from violence.

It was reported that 6 million of Vietnamese have escaped poverty but the poverty gap is still huge among different regions and ethnic groups, which is a major challenge to Vietnam’s achievement of its Sustainable Development Goal 1. Among 17 goals, goal No.1 is the most achievable for Vietnam in which it has made impressive progress. Poverty reduction has lifted Vietnam nine notches to rank 57th among 193 UN members in regard of the SDG Index in 2018.
According to Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Country Director, Vietnam’s success in poverty reduction depends on the ability to ensure inclusive growth, generate more jobs, and effectively support for the most vulnerable people.
