Rights of ASEAN women and children promoted

(VOVworld) – The 2-year operations of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) in Vietnam were reviewed at a conference held Wednesday in Hanoi. The conference was hosted by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, and the UN Women in Vietnam. Participants suggested that the ACWC in Vietnam should work more closely and share experience with its counterparts in the region to consult governments on promoting and protecting the rights of ASEAN women and children.

Established in 2010 in Hanoi, the ACWC works to fight trafficking in women and children and to protect the rights of women and disabled children. The organization also encourages women’s involvement in politics, decision making, management, and democracy. The ACWC is a volunteer group, getting much of its support from ministries, sectors, agencies, organizations, and individuals. The commission is tasked with linking organizations under Vietnam’s network with regional and world organizations working in this field. In the next two years, the commission will issue publications to review, research, and better implement final proposals by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
