(VOVworld) - China and Russia on Thursday vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court for possible prosecution of war crimes committed during the country's civil war.

South Korean Ambassador Oh Joon, rotating President of the Council said the resolution, which was backed by the other 13 members of the Council, was not adopted due to the opposition of Russia and China, both permanent members of the Council.The resolution, initiated by western countries, cited mounting atrocities in Syria during the 4-year civil war that has killed at least 150,000 people. The crimes include chemical attacks, torture, barrel bombings, and blocked humanitarian aid.
This was the fourth time Russia and China have used their veto power to block UN action on Syria. The resolution, drafted by France, has received support from several EU member nations, Japan, South Korea, and several African nations.
